Not because it’s easy

We should always approach a problem and look to find the option that gives us the best result not the one that is a quick fix. Diets can be much the same. Just because going on the low-fat, low-cal diet is easier, after all, all of the work is done for you, all of the food and resources are there for you already in most supermarkets, they are a plaster on a broken bone. Anyone who has ever done something the hard way finds the same thing, that the journey becomes as important as the destination. You join me now on the precipice of my journey into paleo. I’m 24 years old with a 2 year old son, my life isn’t massively active although I walk pretty much everywhere which to be fair is mainly due to not having passed my driving test. Currently my favorite foods are things that I really shouldn’t eat, also for the record I’m not a big drinker socially I drink a few beers but not an awful lot at home.

I have chosen to go paleo mainly because it allows as much meat and veg as I want. My first thought was “ok so I can lose weight having egg and Bacon for breakfast… Win!”. I’ll hasten to add that I don’t think that paleo is a fad diet its not some cress and cucumber bull shit diet with a celebrity endorsement. Paleo encourages a way of thinking, I like chocolate and I like ice cream and a lot of other things that would be mentioned in Bridget Jones’ diary but if I want to have it I will. The most important thing is that I won’t berate myself for having it. As long as I enjoyed it and I don’t make it a mainstay of my diet I’m not going to lose sleep over a tub of Ben & Jerry’s.

For the most part though I’m going to stick pretty rigidly to the basics of paleo, no grains no legumes and no dairy. A lot of what I’m going to do will fly in the face of the common wisdom, I’ll be frying Bacon in lard along with my eggs, I’ll have fatty cuts of meat and I will lose fat. Notice here I said fat, not weight, if I lose weight there’s a good chance I’m going to be losing muscle mass which is bad but there will be another post regarding that at some stage. Tonight I will enjoy a pizza or some other dish packed full of rubbish then I intend to bid farewell to these processed carbs and make moves towards enjoying a long and healthy life. Join me if you will and if you think you see a benefit that you would enjoy then join in with me.

Intro

Every day there is another low-fat, low-calorie, low salt product entering the market place. Did you ever stop and wonder if they are taking these things out what are they putting in? Can you pronounce all of the ingredients in your favorite brand low-fat margarine? If you can, more power to you hopefully when you can pronounce all the ide’s, ene’s and nyl’s you will also realise that these are not the sort of chemicals you want to be putting in your body. If you can’t pronounce them then you should really think the same that these things don’t form naturally. Clean living is a lifestyle of eating foods we were supposed to eat; meat, fish, veg, fruits and berries etc. A way of thinking that says “I’m not sure what that is so id rather not attempt to digest it”. Also on top of things we would rather not consume, is sugars, corn syrups and other fructose type sweeteners that are in a lot of modern “diet foods”. The biggest thing to get around is that modern health foods are a lie to keep milking the cash cow. Low fat diets pumped with sweeteners so that you think its sweeter than it is and more satisfying… for the moment at least. Artificial sweeteners and fructose type sugars send a message to our brains that we are about to receive calories and sugar but then they don’t appear. As a result the body kicks up the insulin levels to deal with this. Truth is there isn’t enough calories to manage this so the body will expect more, ever wondered why you crave snacks and sweets more on a diet than when you eat normally? This benefits the producers of these low-fat meals and diet plans very specifically because you WILL fall of the wagon and then you WILL buy more of their products to try to get back on, oh and here is the punch line, it’s low-fat, low salt and the rest of it so there is less in it right… so why are they more expensive than their full fat counter parts? For months I have looked into Paleo diets directly from hearing and interview with Robb Wolf and lifestyles and the biggest problem for me is that they all American, this is fine when I remember that a zucchini is a courgette and things like that but there is no resource for easy meal options for either clean living. For a start they are mainly in imperial measurements and being a product of the Blair education system it’s all nonsense to me, but also they are predominantly American recipes of course they are paleo diets are not overly popular over here yet. So this is our mission statement to provide a resource for paleo and clean living “cheat meals” off the shelves and ready to eat and for UK paleo dieters, for supermarkets here in the UK as well as recipes that we stumble across, or enjoy from America and translate.

Add to this some exercise, do you have a gym membership?  Do you actually attend?  A lot of people don’t, a lot of people pay a lot of money every month to either not attend at all or to not attend enough to make it worth the money, not only that but if you do attend, do you realise that gyms can actually be bad for your body?  Using machines like that move your body in a very artificial way causing a lot of strain on the body, if you go to a gym think about the movements that you make on the machines, now think of where you perform movements like that in everyday life, even if you can think of an example of where you would use the movement…do you have a machine keeping you moving in such a rigid and artificial way as if you’re moving on rails?  If you have a clean or relatively clean diet then on the fitness side of things you can get quite a lot out of everyday tasks by living an active life, no gyms, no weights, no exercise machines.  If your job or other aspects of your life restrict that or if you want to train for extra strength and endurance you can do it for little to no cost, very little equipment (even no equipment) and without too much strain on your body, you will build true strength that can be used in real life, not just muscles that look big to impress people at the gym.

Following this combination of natural, clean eating and natural exercise, you’ll become fitter, stronger, happier, less stressed and less susceptible to disease, you’re likely to find that you visit the doctor and take medication a lot less than you used to, you might find that existing medical conditions are relieved slightly or even go away completely, we can’t promise that but that’s what some people find, we don’t want to get into politics on this site but remember that large companies and government profit from you being on medication, they profit from the bad food that they sell you which makes you ill and they also profit from the medication which supposedly makes you better, we’ll leave that for you to think about….

We’re not experts in science or nutrition, we’re not sports scientists or anything like that, why trust us? Firstly, this is how we live ourselves, we wanted to set this up to share knowledge on the subject that we acquire with each other, but then thought we might as well let anyone access it and benefit from it, there are also people who are experts in this ranging from scientists to soldiers who can back it up with scientific fact and experience.  Secondly, we’re not asking for money from you, the big food companies are, we have no motive for deceiving you, they do, profit.  We understand that these things are difficult to understand and trust at first, after all we are telling you that most of what you’ve heard about diet and fitness is a lie, we’re telling you not to put so much trust into companies and organisations that you’ve been conditioned to trust and listen to but this has worked for us, it can work for you, when you think about the fact that it’s largely based on what people have done throughout history, you can’t really argue with it, the human race has got through thousands of years without artificial sugars and chemicals in their foods, they also got along just fine without agriculture for a long time too and face it, they were fitter and stronger than people are today, Spartan warriors did not go to the gym and exercise on machines and they didn’t eat low-fat “health foods”, you don’t need to either.
